New release is the most affordable, versatile and fully featured SRS available for K12

AUSTIN, Texas – Most American educators are familiar with Qwizdom’s interactive classroom technology, but only those attending the Texas Computer Education Association Conference this February will have the unique opportunity to squeeze in hands-on time with the company’s newest hardware release – the Q6 student response system.

Available for pre-order in late march of this year, the Qwizdom Q6 Student Response System is unique in that it offers more opportunity for collaboration than with any previous system, including an easy-to-use keypad similar to a cell phone, text input and a larger LCD screen to view full responses. The small, ergonomic radio frequency remotes allow each student to communicate with the teacher from up to 328 feet away and are durability-tested to withstand the rigors of the classroom.

As the teacher presents questions on a screen, verbally, or by using paper-based activities, pupils enter responses with their remotes. The teacher‘s computer instantly receives the responses and records the results, allowing the freedom to easily manage and control the format and speed of the lesson. The instant response also allows the educator to gauge students’ overall comprehension or to zero in on a struggling pupil. In turn, a student is notified when their response has been received and can silently signal the teacher for help, easing the fear of judgment by peers or falling behind in class.

The device’s 1.8 × 1.5” LCD screen allows for up to 116 character input per transmission. Multiple mark, numeric, sequencing, rating scale, yes/no, fractional/decimal, multiple choice, true/false, and short answer questions are all supported by the Q6. Battery life is a year on average.

Software used with Q6 remotes is both PC and Mac-friendly, integrating easily with PowerPoint® and Keynote®. Additionally, Qwizdom Connect software works with hundreds of thousands of pre-made curriculum resource slides.

The company says it hopes to see the technology encourage teachers/administrators to create engaging classroom experiences that help students succeed.

Two ways to win:

1. Visit Qwizdom on the trade show floor…

Qwizdom can be found in booth #1423, a demonstration area, and in booth #2459, where conference attendees can spend hands-on time with WizTeach, software designed to allow teachers to choose tool combinations that cater to the subject they teach. Conference badges will be scanned at both booths, automatically entering attendees to win a Q7 tablet, a mini interactive portable whiteboard. Qwizdom representatives will demonstrate various education tools every hour, on the hour, in booth #1423. Participants will receive a Qwizdom Tshirt for attending and are encouraged to wear it around Austin and at the show. A tap on the shoulder from a Qwizdom representative means a free classroom set of Q2 remotes. Additional giveaways every hour include a Q7 Tablet, Premium/ReadySet curriculum and Connect software.

2. Follow @Qwizdom on Twitter…

During TCEA (Feb 8- 12), Qwizdom will ask its followers trivia question’s about the Q6 student response system, the company’s up-and-coming release. Prior to each trivia question, the company will tweet at least two hyperlink “hints” leading to where the answer may be found. (Think of it as an open-book test!) The first correct reply to @Qwizdom will win.

Tweetaway prizes are as follows:

Wednesday 2/10 – Set of 24 Q2 Student Response Remotes with a Q7 Tablet, Connect Software and WizTeach Tools.

Thursday 2/11 – Set of 24 Q2 Student Response Remotes with a Q7 Tablet, Connect Software, WizTeach Tools and Premium Service.

The “tweetaway” and giveaways are open to educators across America. (Please note that this promotion is not available to educators outside of the United States).

Qwizdom will kick off the Florida Education Technology Conference (FETC) by giving and “tweeting away” over $30,000.00 in student response systems and software to educators attending FETC and across the nation. The company says it hopes to see the technology encourage teachers to ring in 2010 with interactive, engaging classroom experiences which help students to succeed.

Two ways to win:

1. Visit Qwizdom on the trade show floor…

Qwizdom can be found in booth 515, a demonstration area, and in booth 438, where conference attendees can spend hands-on time with the Q7 tablet, a mini interactive portable whiteboard. Conference badges will be scanned at both booths, automatically entering attendees to win Q7 of their own. Qwizdom representatives will demonstrate various education tools every hour, on the hour, in booth 515 and participants will receive a Qwizdom Tshirt for attending. Wearing the T-shirt is another way to win. A tap on the shoulder from a Qwizdom representative means a free classroom set of Q2 remotes. Also up for grabs every hour is a Q7 Tablet, Premium Service and Connect software.

2. Follow @Qwizdom on Twitter…

During the Florida Educational Technology Conference (Jan 12- 15), Qwizdom will ask its followers basic trivia questions. Prior to each trivia question, the company will tweet at least two hyperlink “hints” leading to where the answer may be found. (Think of it as an open-book test!) The first correct response made in reply to @Qwizdom will win.

Tweetaway prizes are as follows:

Thursday 1/14 – Set of 24 Q2 Student Response Remotes with a Q7 Tablet, Connect Software and WizTeach Tools.

Friday 1/15 – Set of 24 Q2 Student Response Remotes with a Q7 Tablet, Connect Software, WizTeach Tools and Premium Service.

The “tweetaway” and giveaways are open to teachers across America. (Please note that this promotion is not available to educators outside of the United States).

The Qwizdom Q7 Tablet combines RF technology, presenter controls, and response-system interactivity. Teachers can use this as they would any other interactive tablet, but if they are using the Qwizdom student-response system, they can enter a question into the Q7 tablet on the fly and see the statistics on that question on the tablet’s built-in LCD screen.

Pros: The tablet use RF to communicate with a computer and the RF session is specific to each tablet, so no cross communication can take place between tablets. The tablet has a nice ergonomic design. The keyboard template is built right into the top of the tablet. The buttons are organized into logical function groups (all drawing buttons are together, all Qwizdom buttons are together, etc). The tablet is customizable for use with any software application and has a large backlit LCD that can show speaker notes and student response data. The RF sender for the computer stores in the back of the tablet. The tablet can recharge using a USB port on computer.

Cons: The software will not work with tablets from competitors. The premium subscription is the only way to get all the state-standard curriculum material. As of this issue’s publication date, material recorded with the Q7 could not be placed on a Web page and played back later, but the company says this feature will be available in the fall of 2009; it applies only to Live Editor files.

Overall evaluation: If a school uses the Qwizdom student-response system, this is an excellent product for it to purchase.

How do you make the most of a lesson on motion?
Central Campus science teacher Mark Turner turned to technology.

Debbie Kuehn has his story in this week’s Eye on education.

It looks like a cross between a remote control and a calculator, but these Minot High students aren’t practicing the age-old art of changing channels.
(Mark Turner, Minot High School) “But you know the kids growing up with Sesame Street and Bill Nye and everything, it puts more and more pressure on education and teachers to almost become entertainers.”

This is an unquenchable quest for quality. Queue Minot High teacher Mark Turner and his newest toy…the quizdom!

(Mark Turner) “They work on radio frequency. And basically what it allows you to do is to interact with the students. In other words, the students each have one of these. I have a master controller plus I have the computer software. And my philosophy is education is really a flow of information back and forth…hopefully more forth to the students, but you need the interaction.”

But quizdom is more than a quirky gadget. Turner says it actually involves the whole group by drawing out quieter students.

(Mark Turner) “I can also choose to have it go into my grade book here. So if I come out here and I ask a question and punch a couple of buttons on here, I can actually record their answers. So they really don’t have time. The quiet ones or the ones who don’t speak out, they really don’t have the ability to just sit back and let everybody answer the questions. This gets every single student involved.”

Whether it’s a chapter quiz or a game for review…Quizdom is quickly quashing the mid-quarter blues.

(Andrew Beeter, Freshman) “It’s really cool. I’ve never seen anything like it. We’ve had a lot of fun with it.”

(Mark Turner) “But every time something new like this comes in, it just inspires me that much more. And so it helps all of us, because I figure if I’m inspired, hopefully they’ll get inspired. I think enthusiasm is the most important thing a teacher can bring to this particular plate right here.”

And with the effort it takes to turn up the volume on your favorite local news program, these Minot High students are unquestionably enjoying science more this year than ever before! With Your Eye on Education, Debbie Kuehn, KX News.
