Attending FETC 2010?  At some point during your visit, you will find yourself in the audience of one of the fantastic presentations on educational technology.  This year several FETC presenters will have an extra interactive element to keep the audience engaged.  Qwizdom will be providing their Student Response System to a select group of presentations.  The idea is to provide an opportunity for the audience to give feedback and enliven their presentations.  The following is a list of presenters who will be taking part in this experience:

One year ago, Qwizdom was featured on the Nightly Business Report as part of their coverage of the “Business of Education” in Orlando and Miami-Dade. With FETC just a week + away, we’re posting the video for reference.

Principal: “I’ve never seen kids so excited about learning. They are being competitive, especially our 8th Graders, who, when it comes to Qwizdom, they get excited. They are learning. They are in their teams.”

How do you make the most of a lesson on motion?
Central Campus science teacher Mark Turner turned to technology.

Debbie Kuehn has his story in this week’s Eye on education.

It looks like a cross between a remote control and a calculator, but these Minot High students aren’t practicing the age-old art of changing channels.
(Mark Turner, Minot High School) “But you know the kids growing up with Sesame Street and Bill Nye and everything, it puts more and more pressure on education and teachers to almost become entertainers.”

This is an unquenchable quest for quality. Queue Minot High teacher Mark Turner and his newest toy…the quizdom!

(Mark Turner) “They work on radio frequency. And basically what it allows you to do is to interact with the students. In other words, the students each have one of these. I have a master controller plus I have the computer software. And my philosophy is education is really a flow of information back and forth…hopefully more forth to the students, but you need the interaction.”

But quizdom is more than a quirky gadget. Turner says it actually involves the whole group by drawing out quieter students.

(Mark Turner) “I can also choose to have it go into my grade book here. So if I come out here and I ask a question and punch a couple of buttons on here, I can actually record their answers. So they really don’t have time. The quiet ones or the ones who don’t speak out, they really don’t have the ability to just sit back and let everybody answer the questions. This gets every single student involved.”

Whether it’s a chapter quiz or a game for review…Quizdom is quickly quashing the mid-quarter blues.

(Andrew Beeter, Freshman) “It’s really cool. I’ve never seen anything like it. We’ve had a lot of fun with it.”

(Mark Turner) “But every time something new like this comes in, it just inspires me that much more. And so it helps all of us, because I figure if I’m inspired, hopefully they’ll get inspired. I think enthusiasm is the most important thing a teacher can bring to this particular plate right here.”
